Project #1: Job Materials

In this project we were tasked to find a job posting on a recruiting website and to draft a Resume and Cover Letter tailored to the job we were applying for. This was our first project in ENC 3241 and it served as a great straightforward way of teaching the basics of technical writing.

I decided to apply to a Game Developer Position posted by Kentish Publishing Company on LinkedIn. It seemed to be a great fit for me, especially because I matched a lot of the criteria that they outlined in their job description. Being able to program in C#, familiarity with the Unity Engine, and a passion for Game Development put me in a good spot.

This project served as a great learning experience for me. After I received feedback from the Professor, I realized I had a long way to go on the road of polishing my technical writing skills.

My Cover letter needed the most work, the Professor pointed out many sentences that could be shortened and crossed out lines that were either redundant or added nothing to the purpose of the Cover letter. I also had some formatting issues. I did not state my address properly and included redundant information in the letter head. However, I was not able to include the recipient’s address, since the job listing and company had no exact address that I could find online (Most likely because this job was remote).

My resume did not conform to one-inch margins, and had a font that was too large. This made it look cluttered. Along with some other feedback with my Professor, I made changes to both my Cover Letter and Resume, and the revised versions can be viewed below.
